Following Donald Trump’s announcement of victory in the U.S. presidential election on Wednesday night, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba congratulated the Republican nominee.

At the Prime Minister’s Office, Ishiba told reporters, “I would like to make efforts to get in touch with Mr. Trump as soon as possible.”

He added that he hoped to have a summit meeting with the incoming U.S. president shortly.

“To advance the U.S.-Japan relationship and alliance to new heights, I hope to collaborate closely with President-elect Trump,” he continued.
